When Christopher Columbus first arrived
in the Americas, ie. San Salvador Island on the eastern fringes
of the Bahamas, on October 14, 1492, he met the Lucayan People.
Thinking that he was on an island adjacent to India, Columbus
referred to these Lucayan as "Indios". A direct Translation
of the word Indios from Portuguese into English gives you....INDIANS! |
Harsh treatment by the Spanish and diseases
led to the demise of the Lucayan. |
