#1. Speakers of the Wood Stoney language indicate that it is much closer to the Assiniboine language than is Stoney Nakoda.

#2. It is thought that the Wood Stoney migrated into their territory via a "northern" route, whereas, the Stony Nakoda are thought to have migrated into their territory via a "southern" route.

#3. It should be noted that "Stoney" is the Cree word for the Assiniboine and they used it because they observed the Assiniboine cooking with the use of stones. This suggests that the Stoney Nakoda origin is within range of the Cree. Thence Saskatchewan, not Montana….

#4. With the depletion of the buffalo in the 1870's, the Stoney Nakoda are thought to have moved from the praires permanently into the Rocky Mountains to subsist on big game. Note however, as the John Bartholomew 1860 map shows, the Stoney Nakoda were spending time in the region prior to the big move.
