This may have occurred due to the 1781 smallpox epidemic which hit the praire tribes hard. Previous to this, the maps also reveal that the Wood Stoney were north of Lake Winnipeg between 1702 and 1772. Prior to that, they were located north of Lake Superior and known as "Assiniboine".
